Elon Musk's Neuralink has developed an experimental device called Blindsight, which aims to restore vision for individuals who are blind, including those who have lost both eyes or their optic nerves. The device targets the visual cortex, implanting a microelectrode array that activates neurons to create visual images. Recently, it received FDA breakthrough device designation, expediting its development process. Initially, the vision quality may be low-resolution, akin to early video games, but future enhancements could allow perception beyond natural sight, including infrared and ultraviolet wavelengths.

Provided the visual cortex is intact, it will even enable those who have been blind from birth to see for the first time.
